Man Behind the Apron

Joe Spiekermann, commonly known as “Joe the Baker”, was born as the third generation of bakers in the Spiekermann baking empire. As a young child, Joe admired his father baking behind the bench and running the family business, Spiekermann's Bakery. He worked side-by-side with his father and knew he wanted to be a baker like his dad for the rest of his life. At the age of 14, Joe worked at the bakery everyday after school and every weekend.

To Joe, quality is essential. He learned that from his grandfather, Frank Spiekermann. Frank founded Spiekermann’s Bakery in 1919 when he introduced the famous loaf of bread – Spiekermann Swiss Peasant Bread, which sold for $0.19.

Due to Joe’s determination and persistence to have the best bakery in town, he became enormously well-known in the tri-state area. His Swiss Bread was named “Best Bread in New York” by New York Magazine. He appeared on Eyewitness News with Bob Lape, the Joe Franklin Show, and Romper Room with Miss Molly. His baked goods have appeared nationwide on The Today Show, ESPN, and the YES Network, along with many other popular television shows. He also appeared on many local news stations and radio such as New Jersey News 12 and WABC.  He has made birthday cakes for countless celebrities from Derek Jeter to Barbara Walters.

After Joe lost his father, he insisted on still making him proud. Everyday he looks to his dad for strength and wisdom. No matter how high or low times may be, Joe will always pull the white strap over his head and tie the strings around his waist. Everyone who has ever met Joe the Baker knows that he is always wearing white, it’s his trademark.

At the age of 30, Joe was diagnosed with diabetes. Since then, he has a strong passion for creating sugar-free baked goods. The bakery has a special section dedicated specially for sugar-free desserts, such as cheesecakes, assorted fruit pies, and strawberry shortcakes.

Joe raised his three daughters in the bakery. They work along side him today helping run the nationally known business.  The fourth generation family bakery celebrates over 90 years of business! Joe welcomes you to the bakery! He values each customer, please introduce yourself to him!

Joe the Baker can be characterized by the words of his business card: President, Owner, Hard Worker, Nice Guy.
